Solar rebate for Adelaide businesses

As a leading solar power company, we were delighted to find out that once again South Australia is showing the rest of the country what needs to be done if we are to make a serious stab at mitigating climate change by harnessing a vast energy resource that is at our fingertips: the sun.

From the beginning, South Australia has been a leading light in the push towards using renewable energy; it was the first state in Australia to introduce a solar feed-in tariff, and is already a world leader in using wind resources. Now the City of Adelaide is the first to offer financial incentives for installing solar battery systems, giving them a head start in the next era within the energy revolution – storage.

Up to $5,000 will be available for city residents and business owners who invest in battery systems, along with ongoing grants of $5,000 towards the cost of rooftop solar panels as part of Adelaide City Council’s Sustainable City Incentive Scheme, aimed at driving community investment in renewables

This move shows that the City of Adelaide is serious in meeting its target to be the world’s first carbon neutral city. With the early adoption of emerging technologies in renewable energy and energy efficiency the Adelaide city community has already reduced carbon emissions by 19% since 2007. With this commitment from the city Council as well as a promise from the State Government to double funding to $300,000 the scheme could provide as much as 600kWh of energy storage, or 1,700kW of solar power stored.

If we are going to see the leaps and bounds in the renewable sector that are necessary for a safe and sustainable future, we need to see more and more of these kinds of initiatives. They spur consumer demand, raise awareness and get the wheels of industry turning in the right direction.

Already 27% of South Australian households have solar PV on their rooftops and 40% of the State’s energy comes from clean sources. The State is well on its way to meeting its target of 50% renewables by 2025. This is the kind of action that we need, if only the rest of the country would follow suit…

This is great news for small businesses who have been assessing the relevance of going solar. Systems above 20kW are eligible to receive a 20% rebate on the overall cost of the system to the amount of $5000, a huge saving and incentive.
