Federal Government solar towns grant empowers South Australian communities
In August 2015, the federal government announced the second round of the Solar Towns grant, which would allow for $300,000 to be utilised in buying and installing new renewable energy systems for two South Australian local government districts, the City of Playford and the City of Salisbury.
South Australia has been on the front foot of the renewable energy movement from the beginning, being the first state in Australia to introduce a solar feed-in tariff in 2008 and supporting continual efforts to light the way for renewable technologies through state-wide incentives and schemes, and under this grant, community groups operating within these local government areas will be eligible for the purchase and installation of a solar photovoltaic system, solar hot water system or heat pump hot water systems valued between $2,500 – $20,000.
The first round of this grant targeted Surf Coast Shire in Victoria, and the highly successful scheme oversaw the installation of 19 solar power systems, with the average system size coming to a cool 13kW. To put this into perspective, if there was to be a similar uptake in the south local government districts targeted by this grant, the average solar power system would generate just under 30 megawatt hours of energy a year, and offset up to 18 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum.
With these upfront reductions on solar power systems, and rebate deadlines fast approaching (applications close on the 9th October) there’s never been a better time to turn to green and clean solar power. For more information on eligibility, and how to apply, click here.
