TAFE New England provides the New England district, spanning over the Northern Tablelands and the North West Slopes, with vocational and tertiary education programs across its eleven campuses.
TAFE New England sought to improve their sustainability practices by incorporating solar photovoltaic systems at three of the campuses. The solar power systems will also offset a significant portion of their electrical consumption, resulting in an immediate financial saving.
In May 2014, TAFE New England awarded Solgen Energy the design and installation of all three solar power systems at the Gunnedah, Moree and Inverell campuses.

Each solar power system was designed to have a 30kWp capacity, and expected to produce a combined 157 Megawatt hours of energy a year.
New England TAFE requested that the three solar power systems were neatly arranged on the respective roof surfaces for aesthetic reasons. They also stipulated they wanted the solar power systems to be designed for maximum energy output.
Solgen Energy conducted an in-depth shading analysis profile which factored in trees, other buildings and the shading of surrounding solar photovoltaic (PV) modules at all three sites to identify the most suitable roof surface to install the solar power systems.
In order to ensure there was no self-shading (surrounding solar PV modules’ shading affecting other modules), Solgen Energy incorporated a flush mounted system on tilted roof at the Moree and Inverell sites.
The Gunnedah site, however, only had flat roof surfaces available for solar panels. This prompted Solgen Energy to utilise a tilt mounted system on flat roof to provide TAFE New England with optimal electrical generation, with wide spacing between the rows of panels to ensure no self-shading occurred.
Due to the shade, limited acceptable roof areas were available at Inverell. Solgen Energy split the Inverell solar power system across multiple buildings to obtain the desired 30kW capacity. During the process Solgen Energy took caution to ensure that an even number of panels were mounted on each building so that the arrays may be easily arranged into symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing layouts.
The installation of the three solar power systems at the TAFE New England Campuses will:
