Solgen Energy was awarded the City of Sydney Solar Power Project to design, install and commission over 1.25MW of solar power installations on major buildings owned by the City of Sydney Council. The systems have been installed on 30 properties throughout the municipality.

The City of Sydney Council set a target of achieving a 70 per cent reduction in carbon emissions across the City of Sydney local government area and to have 25 per cent of its energy needs coming from renewable resources by 2030.

When completed, the City of Sydney Solar Power Project is estimated to deliver a 4.5 per cent reduction in the City’s overall greenhouse gas emissions and 12.5 per cent of the City’s own energy requirements.

Challenges

The key challenges designing and installing the Bourke Street Depot Solar Power System include:

  • Solgen Energy managed all the required approvals and inspections required by the local authorities. The Bourke Street Depot is located in a heritage area and required specific planning approvals before Solgen Energy was able to proceed with installing Solar Panel Project.
  • The roof has three different sections each with a different pitch. Both flush and tilt mounting systems were used in order to achieve a northerly aspect. SMA Sunny Tripower inverters were used and the dual maximum power point tracker was taken advantage of in order to eliminate risk from panel orientation and shading.

Solutions

Solgen Energy has a strong reputation for design and engineering excellence and was able to deliver a Solar Power System that achieved the maximum possible electricity output, while adhering to strict site regulations for the heritage building.

The Solgen Energy Clean Energy Council (CEC) Accredited Engineers designed a system that electrically separated solar modules that would have a negative impact on each other due to shading or orientation. This was done using a strategic string layout plan and several maximum power point trackers.
