Solgen Energy was awarded the City of Sydney Solar Project to design, install and commission over 1.25MW of solar power installations on major buildings owned by the City of Sydney Council. The systems have been installed on 30 properties throughout the municipality.

The City of Sydney Council set a target of achieving a 70 per cent reduction in carbon emissions across the City of Sydney local government area and to have 25 per cent of its energy needs coming from renewable resources by 2030.

When completed, the City of Sydney Solar Power Project is estimated to deliver a 4.5 per cent reduction in the City’s overall greenhouse gas emissions and 12.5 per cent of the City’s own energy requirements.

Challenges

The Epsom Road Depot, located in Zetland is one of the larger City of Sydney owned depots.

The key challenges designing and installing the 197.5kW flush mounted solar panel system at the Epsom Road Depot include:

Epsom Road Depot is part of the Green Square Sustainability project and a portion of the building is set to be demolished to make room for a new park. The design had to account for these future works.
Epsom Road Depot has several different roof sections each of which with a different pitch. The design had to strategically place strings such that no one string would negatively impact any other string.

Solutions

Solgen Energy has a strong reputation for design and engineering excellence and was able to deliver a Solar Power System that achieved the maximum possible electricity output, while adhering to strict site regulations.

The Solgen Energy Clean Energy Council (CEC) Accredited Engineers designed the 197.5kW system to operate at its optimal efficiency. Risks presented from varying roof pitch and shading from HVAC equipment was mitigated through the strategic placing of strings and sub arrays during the design phase.

The Solgen Project Management team worked closely with our client to ensure that the solar system installation met their needs and was successfully delivered on schedule. Solgen Energy managed all the required approvals and inspections required by local authorities and Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP).
