The Lake Macquarie City Council has a leading environment strategy to reduce its carbon emissions through a range of green initiatives. Solgen Energy developed and installed a tailored solution to optimise the solar system power output enabling Lake Macquarie City Council to further enhancing their green credentials.

Solar power project details

Client: Lake Macquarie City Council
Location: Swansea Centre, NSW
Date Completed: July 2013
Solar system peak capacity: 60kW
Module: 240 x Yingli Poly 250W
Inverter: 4 x SMA STP 15000TL
Green savings: 120.76 tonnes of emissions per annum
Solar electricity generated: 112.86MWh per annum

This Council Solar Power Project presented a number of unique challenges, for which Solgen Energy was able to develop an innovative design and construction methodology. Some of the key challenges have been:

  • The unique sawtooth roof structure of the building made it necessary to distribute the arrays over several roof sections. A well balanced layout that considers shading and string configuration was needed to ensure best performance of the system.
  • The local Distribution Network Provider (DNSP) required the client to enter into a Generator Connection Agreement (GCA)for the solar installation.

Solgen developed a symmetrical design that not only delivers high electricity yields but also visually blends in well with the complex roof structure. Shading issues were mitigated and an efficient string layout implemented.

Solgen assisted the council in large parts of the GCA negotiation process. Our client was presented with the completed agreement for final review and signature.

Benefits

The Solar System Project demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the Lake Macquarie City Council to Green initiatives. The new solar power system simultaneously provided the Lake Macquarie City Council with immediate financial benefits and a sustainable long term carbon reduction providing a positive benefit to the environment.

The major benefits of the Lake Macquarie City Council Solar Installation at the Swansea Centre include:

  • The generation of approximately 112.86MWh of renewable electricity per annum while reducing the energy demand from non-sustainable resources
  • The reduction of CO2 emissions by 120.76 tonnes per year
  • The ability to view and analyse energy generation results using the comprehensive monitoring equipment installed with the solar system
