TAFE NSW is Australia’s largest training provider and for hundreds of thousands of people each year it stands for high quality, accessible training. TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute (WSI) operates nine campuses across Western Sydney and offers students a range of innovative Green Skills courses for the emerging green economy.

WSI has implemented a range of green initiatives across the nine campuses, including water, energy and waste minimisation measures. WSI has noticed a demand in the green skills area and
is building a new training facility at Nirimba which will incorporate green technologies including solar and be used for both core and commercial training.

WSI has long been a leader in energy conservation and sustainability. As part of its Live it! Love it! GREEN it! Program, WSI was successful in receiving Federal Government funding for the installation of renewable energy projects at several of its sites to help reduce its energy costs, carbon emissions and take a leadership position in the fight against climate change.

Solar Power Project Details

Key facts about this Tafe Solar Power Project:

Client: Tafe NSW Western Sydney Institute
Location: Western Sydney Institute Campuses
Date Completed: June 2010
Solar system peak capacity: 160kW
Module: Schott Poly & ASI Solar Modules
Inverter: SMA Inverters
Green savings: 300 tonnes of emissions per annum
Solar electricity generated: 270MWh per annum

Challenges

As the preferred supplier for NSW Government, Australian owned and operated Solgen Energy was selected to design, install and connect a total of over 160 kilo-watts (kWs) of photovoltaic systems at various sites across the Institute.

Solgen Energy was chosen because of their innovative approach to designing multi-site PV systems using a range of solar PV module technology, as well as their professional and customer focused service.

Solutions

Solgen Energy installed a total of 10 grid connected and 7 stand alone hybrid solar electric systems at the Nepean, Strathfield, Richmond, Mount Druitt, Blacktown, Nirimba and Hills District sites. Several of the systems were designed to provide hands on learning opportunities for TAFE students, enabling students to build their own working PV systems.

Web-enabled monitoring devices were built into the system allowing TAFE staff and students to access real time energy generation statistics, along with the capacity to store and analyse data.

Benefits

The PV Systems will not only reduce energy and operating costs, but position WSI as an environmental leader to its students, staff and the wider community. The solar energy systems will provide numerous ongoing benefits, including:

  • Generate over 270MWh of electricity per annum
  • Prevent over 300 tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere, or the equivalent of powering 37 average Australian homes for a year
  • Address climate change by promoting and modelling sustainability initiatives in the community

Testimonial

“Solgen Energy is a great company to deal with. I’m very happy with the project and cannot fault any service aspects. Solgen Energy are adaptive, flexible, responsive and offer tailored solutions to fit in with specific customer needs.”
