Tyrrell’s Wines goes solar

Solgen Energy Group was awarded the design and installation of the Tyrrell’s Wines 350kW solar power system, one of Australia’s first commercial solar power purchase projects to date. A Power Purchase Agreement allows a business to pay a fixed amount per kilowatt hour for the electricity consumption over an agreed period of time.

Tyrrell’s Wines, a fifth generation Australian family-owned business located in the Hunter Valley, has an impressive history dating back to 1858 when Edward Tyrrell first established the winery.

In September 2009, Tyrrell’s established an Environmental Management program to look at ways to minimize their energy usage and become more energy efficient.

As part of this program, one of the initiatives was to install a large scale solar power system to offset their daily electricity consumption.

Solar Power Project Details

Client: Tyrrell’s Wines
Location: Pokolbin, NSW
Date completed: June 2015
Solar system peak capacity: 350kWp
Panels: 1344 x Trina Solar 260W
Inverter: 16 x SMA Sunny Tripower
Green savings: 490 tonnes of emissions per annum

Heritage winery, new energy source

The Tyrrell’s Vineyard is listed within the Cessnock Heritage Inventory as an item of environmental heritage. As with all projects built within a heritage listed vicinity, this requires extensive planning procedures prior to commencement. Taking this into consideration, a comprehensive Heritage Impact and Environmental Effects Analysis was conducted to determine the site requirements.

The generated solar power needed to be delivered to three separate meter points in order to maximise the benefit. As a result, two rooftop arrays and one ground mount array were installed.

Solgen designed and structured the ground mount framing system to compliment the different ground levels and slopes while maintaining careful consideration of shading risks during certain times of the day. As well as the solar panels, the Solgen engineers needed to come up with a solution to house the inverters. We worked with an external supplier to design a custom built shipping container that could be placed outside of the main switch room to house the inverters. The container, fitted out with inverters and associated switch gear, provided an extremely efficient plug-and-play solution which was fabricated at Solgen’s Sydney warehouse. The result is a 350kW solar power system consisting of a roof mounted and ground mounted solar array, generating up to 40 per cent of the winery’s stable power requirements.

Benefits

Installing a 350kW photovoltaic system will:

  • Generate approximately 563MWh of renewable electricity per annum.
  • Reduce carbon emissions by 490 tonnes per year.
  • Demonstrates Tyrrell’s commitment in taking action against climate change and in promoting sustainable practices.
