Sydney’s sustainable vision

The Victoria Park Pool pv solar power system was designed and built by Solgen Energy Group as part of the City of Sydney’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision.

Solgen Energy Group was awarded the City of Sydney solar project to design, install and commission over 1.25MW of solar power installations on major buildings owned by the City of Sydney Council. The systems are being installed on 30 properties throughout the municipality.

The City of Sydney Council set a target of achieving a 70 per cent reduction in carbon emissions across the City of Sydney local government area and to have 25 per cent of its energy needs coming from renewable resources by 2030.

When completed, the City of Sydney solar power project is estimated to deliver a 4.5 per cent reduction in the City’s overall greenhouse gas emissions and 12.5 per cent of the City’s own energy requirements.

Challenges

The Victoria Park Pool is described as an oasis in the centre of a nine hectare park. It contains an outdoor pool with an audience platform that has a large flat, shade-free concrete roof, the perfect location to install solar panels. This being said, it was explicitly requested in the application that the solar panels not be visible to the public. Also, no penetration to the roof space was permitted.

In addition, the pool is a popular facility visited frequently by members of the public wanting to enjoy a quick dip in this serene park pool. The installation was requested to be discreet and to avoid disturbance to the daily running of the pool and it’s customers.

Solutions

Solgen Energy Group proposed to mount the solar panels flat on top of the roof using a ballast system to avoid visibility. Working with a team of structural engineers, Solgen carried out a load capacity of the roof and designed the ballast system using concrete blocks instead of bolts, thus avoiding the need of penetration to the roof space. This also allows the roof to preserve its original aesthetic design.

Solgen also made special logistical arrangements to ensure that the equipment was transported to and from the work site at low-peak hours so it would not impede public access to the facility. The result is a renewable energy system that is perfectly integrated on one of the signature city facilities open to the public.
